How to Translate a Conversation Out Loud on One Device
When two people do not share a language, passing a phone back and forth and typing into a translation box soon gets in the way of the conversation. A voice translator lets you both talk normally on a single device. You speak, it translates, and your words are read aloud in the other person's language.
How to start a two-way conversation
- Open the Voice Translator. There is no account and no app to install.
- Set up each side. Pick each speaker's language, plus the voice that will read their translations.
- Press start and talk. When you pause, or press Done, your words are translated and spoken aloud.
- Let the other person reply. The microphone switches to their language automatically, so the conversation can carry on back and forth.
What you need
You need a microphone and a browser with both the Web Speech API and the built-in on-device Translator API, which currently means Chrome or Microsoft Edge on desktop. The first use of a new language pair downloads its language pack once. After that it is reused, even offline.
Which voices can speak the translation
The language list is built from the voices installed on your device. For supported languages, each speaker can also pick one of ten Natural AI voices generated in your browser. The first use downloads the voice model once, and each reply then takes a few seconds to generate. Device voices remain the instant option. For more on the difference, see device voices vs AI voices.
What stays private
Translation runs on your device and playback uses local voices, so neither reaches our servers. Voice input is handled by your browser's speech recognition, which in some browsers may process audio in the cloud. The transcript lives only on the page until you clear it or leave.
