How to have a PDF read aloud

Three steps, about a minute, and nothing to install.

  1. Choose your document

Pick a PDF, Word, EPUB, ODT, RTF or text file, or drop it onto the page. Long files show progress while they are read.

  2. Pick a voice

The text opens in the reader. Use Quick for your device's voices or Natural for AI voices that run in your browser.

  3. Listen or download

Press play, then pause, skip or drag through the document at any point. Natural voices can be saved as an audio file.

Read PDFs, Word documents and ebooks aloud

Each format is converted to clean, speakable text before it reaches the reader.

PDF to speech

Reports, papers, manuals and contracts. Page numbers and repeated headers and footers are removed, and lines broken by the page width are joined back into sentences so the voice does not pause mid-sentence.

Word to speech (.docx)

Paragraphs, headings, lists and tables are read in order. Deleted tracked changes and hidden text are skipped, so you hear the document as it reads on screen.

EPUB to audio

DRM-free ebooks are read chapter by chapter in reading order. Pair it with a Natural voice and the download button to turn a chapter into an audio file.

ODT, RTF, Markdown and text

LibreOffice and OpenOffice documents, RTF from WordPad or TextEdit, Markdown notes, saved web pages and plain text files all import the same way.

Your document never leaves your device

Read in your browser

The file is opened with code that runs on this page. There is no upload step, no server copy and no account to attach it to.

Spoken on your device

Quick voices use your operating system's speech engine. Natural voices run an AI model in your browser after a one-time download. Some browsers also offer online voices, which are labelled when they may send text to the browser's provider.

What it cannot read yet

  • Scanned PDFs with no text layer. Run OCR first, then open the result.
  • Password-protected files. Remove the password in the app that made the file.
  • Legacy Word .doc files. Save as .docx or PDF first.
  • DRM-protected ebooks, which are encrypted by the store that sold them.

PDF to speech FAQ

Is this PDF to speech reader free?
Yes. There is no sign-up and no character or page limit. Downloading very long Natural voice audio files (over 10 minutes) costs a small one-off fee; listening is always free.
Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?
No. The document is opened and parsed in your browser on your own device. Only the extracted text is passed to the reader, and it stays on your device too.
Which file types can be read aloud?
PDF, Word (.docx), OpenDocument Text (.odt), EPUB, RTF, Markdown, HTML and plain text. Legacy Word .doc files need to be saved as .docx or PDF first.
Can it read a scanned PDF?
Not yet. A scanned PDF is a picture of each page with no text layer, so there is nothing to read. Run it through OCR first (many scanners and PDF editors can), then open the result here.
Can I save the PDF as an MP3 or audio file?
Yes. Choose a Natural voice and use the download button to save the speech as an audio file you can play offline.
Does it work on iPhone and Android?
Yes. Tap Choose a document to pick a file from your phone. Quick voices work on every device; Natural voices need more memory and work best on a desktop browser.

Already have the text?

Paste it straight into the reader. Every voice, language and control works the same way.
